OVERVIEW:

Intro to Dj’ing is an 8-week beginner’s class for aspiring DJs. Students will learn the fundamental concepts, skills, philosophy, and history of the art of DJ’ing.

Equipment:

AOTA DJing equipment is provided. 10 Spots open this season.

Those who have their own personal laptop, DJ controller, and external hard drive are encouraged to bring them to be able to practice at home and in class with their own music.

OVERVIEW:

DJing is an 8-week beginner/intermediate class for aspiring DJs. Students will learn the fundamental concepts, skills, philosophy, and history of the art of DJing.

Students will cypher with fellow students and teaching artists. Students may have the opportunity to practice at gigs with teaching artists in the community.

Equipment:

AOTA DJing equipment is provided - 5 spots open each season!

Overview:

This is an 8-week project-based course that is designed for artists who are looking to develop their skills in beat-making and rhyme writing.  Throughout the course, learners will develop digital production skills, collaborate on projects, participate in a creative community of their peers, learn hip-hop history and culture, compose original songs, and learn from internationally recognized Hip Hop artists.

Here’s what students will learn:

BEATS:

Focuses on developing the technical skills and theoretical knowledge involved in music production

  • Suggested Materials: 32GB flash drive to save work

  • Equipment: Laptops and Controllers Provided

RHYMES:

In this class, students will learn:

Develops writing skills and knowledge of song composition.

  • Suggested Materials: a composition notebook, phone, laptop, or iPad.

Youth Breaking 1 meets weekly for 8 weeks total. This intro course is for students who are new to breaking.

CONTENT:

Students will learn the building blocks of breaking: beginner moves in toprock, drops and footwork, how to listen and dance to music, Hip Hop history and cultural practices like the cypher.

OVERVIEW:

Youth Breaking 2 meets weekly for 8 weeks total. This course is for returning students who have taken Youth Breaking 1 or Breaking 101. 

CONTENT:

Students will continue learning toprock, drops and footwork, but will also learn basic freezes, including poses like headstands and handstands, and basic powermoves, such as windmills. Students will practice battles and basic routines (dancing in unison).

OVERVIEW:

Hip Hop Street Dance Technique meets weekly for 8 weeks and welcomes one of our Cook Up Teaching Artists, Jared Autrey, to the weekly Youth Classes!

CONTENT:

This class focuses on the 5 foundations and techniques of Hip Hop Dance:
Bounce, Rock, Roll, Groove, and Skate.
As the class builds on these elements, the instruction leads to choreography and application.
